The Umoja Uaso Womens Group lies in the Uaso division
of Samburu district, Kenya. This group is a women-run community-based organizations
of Indigenous Samburu women who have declared their village a Violence-Against-Women-Free
Zone. The community was formed in 1990 by 15 women who became destitute because
they were abandoned by their husbands and were facing many social and economic
difficulties. The women of Umoja support themselves through tourism and the
sale of beadwork. They have established a school for the children of Umoja
and surrounding villages, but are in need of support to fund the construction
of more school buildings, the creation of a feeding program, and a school
bus for children who must otherwise walk for miles to reach the school. Umoja
has helped to encourage the women not to give up, but to work together to
curb violence against women and negative cultural practices that are harmful
to womens health, safety and well-being.
The sale of handmade goods helps to give them the simple support that they
need today.
